Technical Assistance Services for Communities

Overview

Communities, when provided technical expertise and plain language tools to better understand technical information, can provide valuable insights that lead to better decisions, a better environment, and an improved quality of life. Too often, communities are asked to provide input in response to technical questions that require the expertise of those well-versed in environmental science, engineering, policy, and regulations. With its scientists and engineers, Skeo helps provide that input in collaboration with communities, treating communities as partners.

Technical Advising

Skeo has supported EPA’s Technical Assistance Services for Communities (TASC) program since the program’s start in 2007. As part of its program Skeo provides a wide range of support for communities faced with environmental issues. Skeo pairs communities with scientists, engineers, analysts, and planners to help communities better understand and provide input on technical documents and decisions pertaining to Superfund cleanups and other environmental issues. Skeo provides ongoing technical advising support to Superfund community advisory groups as well as local and tribal governments across the country. In addition to frequently supporting Superfund communities, Skeo is often called upon to help communities navigate other environmental and public health challenges, such as the East Palestine train derailment and spill.

Plain Language Communication and Graphics

The ability to communicate in plain language is critical for communities to understand technical information. Skeo uses plain language in its face-to-face communications with communities as well as in its written products. Skeo excels in putting technical reports and fact sheets into plain language. Skeo also understands that thoughtful graphic design is also critical in simplifying technical topics. Skeo develops flyers and handouts, posters, and signage to communicate complex environmental topics, including human health risks.

Technical Trainings and Workshop

Skeo develops general and subject-specific technical trainings for communities to achieve a more in-depth understanding of the Superfund program, individual Superfund sites, and other environmental topics. Skeo works closely to understand what its partner communities are most interested in learning or providing input on, and carefully designs trainings around those topics and goals. Skeo also coordinates and conducts the EPA Superfund Job Training Initiative in communities across the country. These efforts are focused on developing work readiness and environmental remediation skills in unemployed or underemployed residents of Superfund communities to help them gain meaningful employment as part of Superfund site cleanup in or near their communities.
